How to Protect Afro Hair Under Winter Hats

How to Protect Afro Hair Under Winter Hats

The hat problem

Wool and cotton hats absorb moisture from hair and create friction every time they move. For textured hair, that can mean dry edges, frizzed styles and roughened cuticles by the time you get where you're going. The answer isn't avoiding hats — it's preparing for them.

Moisturise before you cover

Never put a hat on dry, unprepared hair. Work a little ZURI GUARD Everyday Living Cream or Leave-In Cream through exposed sections first, so the hours under a hat are hours spent conditioned, not parched.

Line it with satin

A satin-lined hat (or a satin scarf worn underneath) transforms a moisture-absorbing layer into a glide layer. This single change removes most of the friction problem — especially around the hairline and nape.

Choose low-manipulation styles

Styles that tuck ends away — flat twists, low buns, braids — sit comfortably under hats and protect ends from both cold air and fabric friction. Smooth edges with Edge Control before covering for a polished finish that survives the journey.

The arrival ritual

When the hat comes off: a quick pass of the Hair Balm Stick over edges and flyaways, a fluff at the roots, done. Thirty seconds, and no one would know the hat happened.
